Introduction

To Geoscientists Around the World:

The AAPG - EMD connections have evolved out a long history of oil and gas development, which have further expanded into the need to develop the science of geology to support the exploration and development for a variety of new energy resources, whether they be carbon-based, nuclear-based, or consist of energy available in the environment, both now and in the foreseeable future.

EMD also focuses on the unconventional hydrocarbons (including coal-bed methane, gas hydrates, gas shales, oil shale, and oil sands, tight gas sands, and more recently to renewable energy resources – such as wind, solar, tidal, etc.). Additional concerns of the division are the associated technical resources on energy economics and technology and the supporting tools of the energy industry such as geospatial information (remote sensing and GIS).

EMD members actively participate in the society by helping to organize or support meetings either in their local societies or on a regional, national or international level. You will find EMD members volunteering in symposia, workshops, short courses, and field trips, and publishing in the AAPG Bulletin, the AAPG EXPLORER, and in EMD special publications.

The history of the AAPG and its ongoing missions are well expressed and equally applicable to EMD endeavors in a new video.

I look forward to seeing you join EMD.

Sincerely,

Frank E. Walles, P.G.
President, EMD (2009-10)
